Feed Your Faith And Your Fear Will Starve To Death

It will be a cold day in hell when I wake up fearless.

I struggle with fear.
Fear of the unknown.
Fear of not making my sales numbers at work, and then what will happen?
What will happen if I lose my job?
The economy is weak and people are not beating furniture showroom doors down to buy design services and furniture.

Yesterday I was on an emotional roller-coaster.
I had  meetings with two clients who bought nothing. One of them was an antique dealer and everything I showed him he thought was 'poop'. And well, yes, compared to furniture from 150 years ago it is.
But he and his wife still had taste in their rectums.....and I mean that in the nicest way.
You would have to live here to 'get ' what I am talking about. Boca Raton is a very tough environment.
Possibly the most difficult customers in our country. All they care about is their ADDRESS $$$, and their cars $$$, and their jewelry, their hand bags, and how little they can spend to give the impression that they are millionaires or billionaires.

The other client brought in his newly divorced ( 25 year old) ex-wife who is a sexy, gorgeous, skinny, with a boob job. a bombshell with her shirt open to her navel

....and still nothing was cheap enough.
I was showing him 2 Sherill Sofa's that were all upholstered beautifully. They were coordinated to go with his oriental carpet. The floor plan and everything was great.
He liked all of it. He just refused to pay for it.

CHINA, and( it rhymes with) 'Rooms To Blow'  have ruined us. People WITH money don't seem to care
anymore about fine quality. Forget 'fine' quality, they don't even want to pay for good quality.
As far as I am concerned, the furniture from some of these cheapo furniture places is worse than what we used to put in model homes. It wasn't furniture, it was just fashion to explain the space in a home.
If you were unlucky enough to buy the model home with all the furniture in it, and were unlucky enough to get the furniture WET.....IT WOULD EXPAND TO TWICE IT'S NORMAL SIZE.

In just 2 hours I have to show up for work and try to talk to strangers and sell myself. I am feeling beaten up from yesterday.
Today will take some work on my FAITH.
Will things be better today??? (oh please, please, please)

Fear puts hopelessness in my heart.
I must remember that
"Fear imprisons, faith liberates; fear paralyzes, faith empowers;
fear disheartens, faith encourages"

I love you guys.

A Black Parrot in Rockland Maine

There are not a bazillion stores to choose from in Maine for clothes or anything else, so only the strong survive!
The Black Parrot in Rockland Maine is a definite  stop every time I visit.
Here I am wearing one of their hats.
Very Annie Hall.
Don't you think ?

This shop has EVERYTHING.
Marimekko Accessories, which I adore since I first moved to Manhattan and stumbled upon their old shop off 5th Ave.
And now it is all coming back stronger than ever. And, BTW with many of the same designs from the 60's & 70's.

These boots had my name on them.
I love!!!
But far too rich for my pocket ....400.00.

The Black Parrot Shop has the best accessories for dressing.
If you like fingerless gloves & mittens.....you would NEVER be able to choose just one pair.

I thought these were a hoot and a half.
These eggs GLOW in the dark!!
What kind of chicken can do that??

Want the eggs ??
the black parrot , 207 593 9370. they are very sweet & will ship.

Garbo's Closet

"Mauritz Stiller who brought then-19-year-old Greta Gustafson to the United States in 1925. A three-time Oscar nominee, Garbo was given a special 1954 Academy Award for her “unforgettable screen performances.”

*Of her legendary desire for privacy, she remarked in a 1928 interview—one of the few she ever granted—“I wanted to be alone, even as a child. I used to go to a corner and think... Thinking means so much, even to small children.”

I have never seen this picture (above) of Miss Garbo. I was thinking that this could be a model or movie star from a recent film or a fashion mag.

Sometimes my mother will tell me about how she loves this 'movie star' or that 'starlet', I take one look at them and say to myself; "when was ugly pretty?"
In the 1950's, the 40's, 30's ....what was up with physical beauty's standards back then??
Physical beauty does go 'in and out' of fashion .

Greta Garbo is the exception to all the rules.
Classic Beauty.
Then and Now.

I lived in Manhattan from 1974 - 1984 on East 58th. Street.
I walked to and from work on East 58th Street every day. I also walked my Shit-Zu up and down E. 57th, and then down on 1st Ave.
Guess who I saw all the time?
Guess who stopped and talked to me and my little dog when ever she saw me?

That is right! Greta Garbo.

And this is Miss Garbo's Closet

The “closet room.”
*The “closet room,” which Garbo created from a small library, is highlighted by one of the carpets she designed for her 1962 series, Birds in Flight. Over the closet is part of her collection of hats; others are stacked on a carved and painted Russian provincial tea table from circa 1880. Garbo chose the upholstery and drapery fabric, which features African tribal motifs.

Isn't this magnificent ?

*A living room wall adorned with artwork.
For Garbo, color was essential in art and décor, and she surrounded herself with vibrant hues. “I love color,” she once said. “With me it’s inborn. I just know. I didn’t have to learn it.”

I really can't believe how much I love this place.
I love her artwork, her interior color scheme, and the placement of her art and objects.
To me, it is perfection.

What do you think of Garbo' place ?
Do you likie??

"A man is never so proud as when striking an attitude of humility." C.S. Lewis

When you read this I will be in training at a new job. It's not really a 'new' job , I worked for this company briefly 4 years ago.
My town, which by most peoples standards is a very pretty town, has a problem. It's the store fronts. They are emptying out....quickly. The downtown area , on the main street is not good.

As you might imagine, clients are not chasing me down the street. Nor are they throwing money at me for this spectacularly brilliant design brain of mine. I am going to work for a big family furniture business in South Florida. They have a lovely design department too.
So..........if it's Monday, I am in training.
Training to be a better me.... Am I humble? Humility allows me to remain teachable.

I am not the 'boss of me' anymore.
Was I ever ? Even when I worked for myself....I still really worked for who ever was writing the checks for the furniture and fabrics.
I have promised myself that I will have an attitude of gratitude for this opportunity. A good attitude is the only thing that will make me a success.
I think a lot of what went wrong with this country (myself included) is a lack of gratitude for what we had. We fell into the trap of thinking what we had was not enough. There was always something bigger and better right around the corner. We all know (especially a designer)...that bigger is not always better.

About Renée Finberg

I have been in this business since the age of 22.

I love what I do and cannot imagine my life without Design.

Design Challenges are great.

And because of those challenges

I have imported fine antique pieces from Paris,

Designed and Manufactured Furniture,

Created Fantastic Window Treatments,

And solved all kinds of spatial & architectural issues

With my unique style.

If I can't find it, I create it.

My rooms would make excellent movie sets.

I am a visual, tactile and audio sensitive individual.

Creating is what I live for, not math, not spelling, not science.

Just Great Design.

Just imagine how it would be if each of us,

If only for a few hours of everyday,We could be in a space that is our very own.A place that is exactly the way we want it to be

Surrounded by all the things we wanted to see,

The atmosphere we wanted feel, smell and the sound we wanted to listen to.
