To Laminate Or Not To Laminate

I ran upon this home while looking in the New York Social Diary.
I was instantly drawn in because I love Venetian Mirrors.
Above this classic beauty coupled with edgy chairs.

But this is what I really wanted to post about.....
the kitchen chairs and table.

The chairs are 'Louis' and the table is an old industrial table.
Don't these chairs look sparkling clean and white?
Is this very practical for a eat-in kitchen / family room with more than a few kids?
Sure it is......

Now you say, "but those chairs are white?" ,
"how is that practical?"
Laminate your fabric.
You can have
white if you want it!!!
It is amazing....
you can spill dark grape juice,
paint, markers, spaghetti sauce, or anything else those pesky little and big ones might spill.
Just wipe it off.
No stains. Ever!!

I love the crazy light fixtures above.

'Anything Goes'

I am not sure if the floors are Macassar wood
or Brazilian walnut or what, but it is stunning $$$$

Macasser on left and Brazilian walnut on right (or 2nd)????
How would you like to have this terrace off your master ?

Robert and Cortney Novogratz are self-taught designers (Robert was originally a stockbroker and Cortney trained as an actress) who have been enviably successful at finding bargain properties, reading the taste-zeitgeist very well while renovating them and then selling them on for fat profits. But there is another dimension to their lives that grabs almost all the attention: the fact that they have seven kids under the age of 13 – all their own, including two sets of twins—no blended family here. They’re like the Waltons of the West Village, if the Waltons were hip that is. Not surprisingly, they have a book out and their own reality show on Bravo, 9 X Design, coming to a small screen near you very soon You too will get a glimpse at the four washing machines, entryway that resembles a kindergarten cloakroom, and the magically uncluttered surfaces in their spacious, art-filled house on the West Side Highway—move over John and Kate.
*Okay..........here is my big question to you;
Do they look exactly alike or what?????
If you switched their heads of hair they would look the same. No?

What did you like most about this home?

Please take your feet off....

"This is the interior of the Loew's Kings Theater, which opened in 1929, has been ravaged by time, vandals and pigeons.
The theater, on Flatbush Avenue in Brooklyn, last promoted a film in 1977. But a developer has made a down payment on a $70 million renovation and plans to turn the building back into a functioning entertainment site, this time presenting live performances."
(I hope that the New York Times shows the renovated movie house)

How many places like this
have you seen completely torn down?
Demolished.
The old movie theaters were so fabulous. Most of the new ones are boring multi-plex's.
They are just ugly rooms that they stuff us into.
The old ones had beautiful draperies, super cushy seats, elegant lobbies,
gilded gold fixtures, fountains, and they even had 'ushers'.
Does anybody remember  'movie ushers?'
They were the guys who would come around and
tell us " Please take your feet off the back of the seats."
When we were kids they were the enemy.....
but how I long for the day that we had ushers telling us to
'take your feet down off the seat in front of you!!"
Because that would mean the theater would be a fine and beautiful place again......

Hopefully the Loew's Kings Theater will be beautiful again someday soon.

When was the last time you witnessed a beautiful building

being torn down rather than being restored to it's glory days?

How did you feel?

A Bit Of Design Inspiration

In my previous post I was talking about Barbara Barry's
Wedgwood pattern called 'Radiance.'
My response from you was a resounding 'YES.'

2.
I get 'stale' sometimes and need inspiration.

3
I bet even Miss Barry, on occasion gets 'stale' as well.
Maybe this is how her 'Radiance' pattern came about.
Who really knows?

4                                 But I know this......

5
Sometimes it is a little thing you see,
maybe it is just for a second,
but it triggers something inside you.

6
It may get stored on your 'hard drive' somewhere,
and it gets spit back up later.
Suddenly your juices get to flowing and you are 'inspired.'
You may not remember what, where,
or why you thought of this color scheme or this pattern.....
You don't care.... you are in your BLISS.
You are creating!!!!!  :)

My Favorite Comfort Food - Chicken Paprikash

Every country household had a yard full of chickens. Chicken dishes that could be slow cooked on the stove for supper were plentiful and cheap to make. Paprikas was a weekly dish for supper. A pot of potato dumplings, and perhaps a platter of pickled hungarian peppers and a loaf of crusty home baked bread was all that was need for ones well being. Every meal was eaten with gusto.

Regards, June Meyer.

This is my favorite comfort food.
And I need some.
If you do too, try this.
YUMMO!!!!
  • 2 onions chopped
  • 4 Tbsp. shortening, corn oil or lard
  • 3 Tbsp. Hungarian paprika
  • 1/8 Tsp. black pepper or whole pepper corns
  • 2 Tsp. salt
  • 4 to 5 lbs. chicken disjointed, use legs, thighs, breast and back for best flavor
  • 1 1/2 cups water
  • 1/2 pt. sour cream
Brown onions in shortening. Add seasonings and chicken, brown 10 minutes. Add water, cover and let simmer slowly until it is tender. It will smell wonderful!
Remove chicken, add sour cream to drippings in pan and mix well. To thicken gravy, mix into a paste 1 Tbl. soft butter with 1 Tbl.of flour and stir into drippings.
Add dumplings and arrange chicken on top. Heat through, but do not boil, and serve.

* here is my secret:
more sour cream, and I serve it on wide egg noodles.
mmmm mmmm mmmm  THE BEST!!!

Have you ever had Chicken Paprikash ???

About Renée Finberg

I have been in this business since the age of 22.

I love what I do and cannot imagine my life without Design.

Design Challenges are great.

And because of those challenges

I have imported fine antique pieces from Paris,

Designed and Manufactured Furniture,

Created Fantastic Window Treatments,

And solved all kinds of spatial & architectural issues

With my unique style.

If I can't find it, I create it.

My rooms would make excellent movie sets.

I am a visual, tactile and audio sensitive individual.

Creating is what I live for, not math, not spelling, not science.

Just Great Design.

Just imagine how it would be if each of us,

If only for a few hours of everyday,We could be in a space that is our very own.A place that is exactly the way we want it to be

Surrounded by all the things we wanted to see,

The atmosphere we wanted feel, smell and the sound we wanted to listen to.

Private Paradise
