Cultivate What Your Critics Don't Like

Listen carefully to first criticisms of your work.
Note just what it is about your work that critics don't like -

then cultivate it!!

That's the part of your work that's individual and worth keeping.
Jean Cocteau

Can you think of  better advice for a creative individual?

It takes great courage and confidence of steel to follow through with this advice.
But...think about anyone who is famous probably did (without knowing it),
or never heard or listened to the critics.
They are unique. No?

I   " 5  fingered "   this quote from Yvette @ In So Many Words

Which Tree For Me?

I have narrowed it down to one of these trees.

The yellow,

the purple,

or the orangie-red????

This last tree is called an african tulip tree.
I have wanted one of these for years,
but they get huge.

Which tree do you like?

Annechovie's Sihouettes

We all love Annechovie's Anne Harwell

And....
Anne Harwell
Recently posted on a new art series of hers.
I thought they would catch on ....
and create a whole new set of collectors.

::Silhouettes::

Miss Harwell's silhouettes would look better than these.
No?

From what I am reading,
Annechovie's very art in silhouette
is ' trending ' right now.

Have you seen this recent post of Annechovie's?
Do you know anything about the history of silhouette or shadows?
There is a link below that will take you to some history,
as well as one that will take you directly to Annechovie.

13 Months

Have you
had good, fair, to a not so good experience with a builder or contractor?
Or even a furniture manufacturer?

I was doing a clients home here in Florida
across the street from the ocean in Delray Beach.
It was taking forever to finish this home.
We had to get the herring bone walnut floors done right,
the insets in the marble done.
And done right.

Expecting work 'done right' in South Florida is somewhat of an oxymoron.
Sorry Florida.
Only if you are using 'HIGH END' manufacturers, contractors, workrooms, and builders
can you expect good to perfect work.
And I need  'perfect' work'
Just remember there is no such thing as 'a deal,'
or an unbelievably great price on something that requires any sort of skill.

Back to the builder....
beside the fact that he was a smug spoiled brat who was in his family's business...
the building of this house went on for 2 years.
It may have been 10,000 sq. ft.
but C'mon!!!!

{he had the same size crew working on the Delray house}
He kept telling me fibs daily about this and that.
He said; " It takes a long time to do a home like this and of this size."
So...
I said;
" Okay...You are a builder, and your family has been in the business
here in Florida over 25 years. Right?"
 "That's right!!!"
said the smug little 40 something brat.

I said;
"I am sure that you know it only took 13 months to build the Empire State building. Right?"

You might ask me; "SO, what did he say then?"

He said nothing. Like most men when they are in the wrong.

DID YOU KNOW
that the Empire State build was built in about 13 months?

Glamorous Make-Up

This is where I want to get dressed for work each day.
These silver leafed walls are divine.
The dressing table is not too bad either.
{ love it }
I would change the chair and the chandelier,
but the rest is just fine by me.
Oh,
I would add austrian shades on the window,
loosing the crystal beads.
And do a fabulous antique area rug in neutrals.

You know, I get this often,
people come to me with previously designed homes and want me to work miracles.
I only wish they would come to me with something like this!!!
It is almost always a nightmare.

Just a few changes would soften it up and really make it my own.

How about you?
What might you change in this room
to personalize it to your taste?
...if that is possible.
I know this is way over the top for many.
I live glamorously in my head, so why not in my dressing room?

What Would You Do????

I saw this and thought to myself....
OMG!!
 This could be fabulous.
It was born fabulous!

This settee 'could go any way' I want it to.
Be anything I want it to be.

It could be shabby chic-ish
{ just leave it alone - hahaha }

or it could go classic -  traditional,
 { just restore it to it's former glory }
or
it could go' glamour ' with a lacquered finish and wild fabrics...
or not so wild fabrics.

What would you do???
{ or not }

You Can Swim In and Swim Out

When I was a kid in Houston Texas my parents had a friend
who had a house with one of these 'swim in swim out' swimming pools.
All these years later I still think of them.
I thought it was the coolest thing ever.
I have searched the blogasphere far and wide
and could never find any of these fabulous swimming pools.
I think it was because I didn't know what search word to use.
I tried everything.
I have wanted to post about this forever.
And finally I was searching for something else and found this particular pool in Elle Decor
And finally.........
here we go.
The clearest and easiest example for you to see is the one above.

See the gate that will drop down to below the water line?

The one I swam in was like the pool above.
Do you see the glass floor that you must swim under and through to get to the outside?
There are very clever ways in which the can connect the exterior pool to the inside.
I can see a Criminal Minds episode based on one of these pools.
The killer swims in to the house in the middle of the night.....
you know the rest.
I think I would want one.
As long as the water was filter with that pool filter that uses no chlorine
and makes the water like spring water.

I do remember the smell of chlorine in the house from the indoor portion of the pool.
That is just not acceptable to me.

What is your take on these Swim In Swim Out Pool????
Would you consider having one?

If You Are On The North Shore In Chicago...

In Chicago.....
Christopher Guy has opened a new showroom.
Hollywood Classic Glamour, I love it.
And if you are a designer,
I think you NEED to go.
It is Christopher Guy's second showroom in the U.S.
The other is in Beverly Hills.
I say "Why not on Worth Avenue in Palm Beach?"
Are you listening Mr. Christopher Guy?
Palm Beach would just LOVE your line.
Palm Beach is glamorous.
 No?
I would be more than happy to run the showroom and bring in countless design jobs.

This is pure genius.

A truly elegant planter.
It is so me.
I could use this in every job I do.

Am I right?
Elegant?

Okay....take a moment to find your drool buckets and strap them on for sofa number 60-0002.
You know how I feel about armless sofas.
This one is fabulous.
And the fabric combinations could be endless if you needed them to be.
But....why?
The sofa speaks.
Here is another teaser from Christopher Guy
 that I have below.

A Christopher Guy cocktail table.

He has the largest variety of screens I have seen from one company.
You can view Christopher Guy's Showroom Product Line HERE.
Go, go now and check out his screens and everything else.

What do you think?
Is this Glamour or What??

The Sweetest And The Saddest...

I came across this image and was touched deeply.
They are homeless.
I simply can not imagine how horrible it must be to struggle to care for ones self
and to try your best to care for another helpless small 'being' while living on the street.
This picture made me cry and smile at the same time.
What I see is the love and caring between them.
They are not alone, they have each other.
It seems to me...
that is everything.

What do you see?

A Home Made Of LIVING WALLS

"You may have heard of living walls, but how about a living box?"

"The exterior walls of the new wing of the Bricault family's Venice home are clad in sedums and other succulents, which soften the contemporary architecture so it looks like a plush, verdant floating cube. Paul Bricault likes the way the horticultural house gets people talking."

I am fascinated with this concept and if you go to the link of and earlier post of mine
you will see many examples.

What a great idea to do at home for the kids.
Or for me....I have a room with a 23 foot ceiling height ,
and certainly could use the strength training.

If you could....would you ever use a living wall?
