I SPY - A Bottle Tree

Bottle Trees

What is a bottle tree?

The bottle tree's origins can be traced back to Africa. Evidently, it was believed that shiny objects placed around the home would attract evil spirits away from the family. With the tragedy of the slave trade, the tradition found its way to North America and continued to evolve into the hanging of bottles in trees to "trap" the evil spirits.
We don't believe bottles could in any way "trap" evil spirits. However, over the years the bottle tree has become a very unique Southern gardening tradition.
Everyone wants their yard or garden to be unique in some way. Landscaping has become so predictable, that without spending an enormous amount of time and money in your yard or garden, it is becoming difficult to be different. UNLESS YOU GET CREATIVE! Bottle trees give you the chance to be creative! They allow you to put your own twist on your yard or garden.

At the moment I need a bottle tree in my yard.
I live in a community with a Home Owners Association.
OMG!!!!
Is it only the SICK that get on these boards?
There is a rumor flying around the community that
I have a motorcycle and am riding it all the time,
which is in clear violation of the 'by-laws' where I live.

I am afraid of motorcycles.!!!
I don't ride one.

I need a bottle tree.
But I am sure it would be in violation of something here.

xx happy weekend

  1. My sister has a blue one by her pool. It is very pretty and reflective. Her mother in law gave it to her.

  2. Made an altar in my potager, over it is a cross. Nails coat the eastern white cedar (appropriate yes?) covered with blue bottles.

With 2 wire urns from the Smith/Hawken going out of business sale I made 'floral' arrangements of bottles. Each bottle on a different length of bamboo stick.

In my head YOU are a vision on the motorcyle !!

Garden & be Well, XO Tara

  3. I am not one for
flotsam and jetsam in my garden. It's like
okefenokee ville to me. I have seen yards with that stuff in the North as well as the South.

I loved the chandelier in your tree .

  7. Too funny, Renee! HOA are clubs for micromanagers and frustrated control freaks. I could use a bottle tree to trap a few evil spirits I know, if only they'd stay confined to the bottles! LOL
Have a great weekend, sweet friend. xo

  8. Where do you find all your ideas for your posts? You come up with the most interesting humorous topics!....speaking of neighbors...my old neighbors who just lost their house (defaulting on mortgage, what else) called the police telling them that my kids were having a RAVE party in their old backyard. The police came crashing down on us and found...a bunch of late 40's early 50's celebrating my birthday! So much for minding your own business.

  11. I love bottle trees and I love art that encourages one to recycle and to drink more wine! It's a win/win. Renee I think that is your evil twin Deb that they've been seeing on the motorcycle. Such an appropriate post since I just got back from a 40 mile ride this a.m...ha! Damn those HOA folk don't they know that taking away a persons freedom to ride motorcycles is a sin? They are always the same people who are on the boards at church or the PTA.

Love ya from the biker chic xx
