The secret to creativity
is knowing how to hide your sources.

As a designer
this is an important practice
that I am not always good at.
Are you?

Good morning lovely - I'm not good @ hiding much. Life = open book!
ReplyDeleteHope you have a great day off and sending you a HUGE hug.

With the internet it is almost impossible to hide a source anymore.
ReplyDeleteAnd so many wholesale vendor sites will sell at retail prices to the public.
And there are plenty of to-the-trade vendor sites too, that you need login passwords for.
Savvy shoppers will always find a source if they are determined to do so.
While I don't broadcast a source, I don't hide it either.

I heard a great line from a gift shop owner....when asked where she gets her stuff she replies " the stuff store"

Like VV says, there are no secrets anymore, so it's just a matter of time before somebody discovers your designer warehouse of coral/suzanis/whatever, announces it to the world & turns your former signature item into a cliche. Life's hard enough already without having to worry about a pack of copycats nipping at your heels.
ReplyDeleteBut good designers don't have to worry about having their sources outed, because their greatest skill is not sourcing remarkable pieces--with enough money, anybody can do that--but combining things--even things that may, in themselves, be unremarkable--in such a way that they seem to be remarkable. The ability to create a whole greater than the sum of its parts is where genius lies, and it's not something you can buy online.
Magnaverde Rule No. 1 Don't confuse decorating with shopping.

I agree that it is hard to hide your resources in today's electronic age, and magmaverde has hit the nail on the head! I like to custom design most of the pieces I use for myclients, after all they are hiring me because they want something unique.

ReplyDeletei couldn't agree with you more.
i do much of the same.

Magneverde got it right in her comments to you and I add:
ReplyDeleteIts not where you get the pieces - its the creativity in which they are used to make a whole setting/room/home/project come together.
I can buy something anywhere - and anyone can go and buy the same thing. But no one can design my way. Each of us is unique and that can't be bought in a store.
