How 'Green' Can I Be?.

I saw this galvanized sink
in a post on Millie's Blog,
'The Laurel Hedge' last night.
I really, really like the look. I have always been drawn to industrial touches.
In addition, the sink made me think of
a time when I was a wee little kid
still living in Texas at my grandmother's house.
She had a washtub or a rotating washing machine
Out in the shed in the backyard.

The thing I remember is being fascinated by
' THE WRINGER'.
Those 2 rubber rolls that you put the fabric into.
You would then crank the handle and the fabric would come out the other side completely squeezed out.
So wrung out that it was amazing to me.
Sort of like magic to a little kid.
But I remember the warning.......
don't get your fingers caught in the wringer.
OUCH....
hence the saying;
'He's been through the wringer!'
I think I did something just like this .....

Doesn't she just look glamorous with her modern machine ?

The Wringer
You can buy a new wringer here.
And strap it onto your fabulous new tub.

Here are some alternatives to the shiny silver sinks.

I think these are so adorable. There are a 'bazzillion' designs.
Check it out.

Are you ready to go green again?
Things were uncomplicated.

I wondered when I would see this in movies.
How did they ever do this????
It looked to me that they were clothes lines on pulleys.
What do you think?
Were they?

I think a cute new tub hooked up like the first image,
with a brand new wringer would be great for hand washed items.
...But the whole load?
How far are you willing to go to be 'green.'
All I can handle is a bit of hand wash.

Many of the images in the post were from people's sites who want to live 'off the grid.'
The term off-the-grid (OTG) or off-grid
refers to living in a self-sufficient manner without reliance on one or more public utilities.
(From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)
I am perfectly happy
living 'on the grid.'

  1. Wow! You know how to bring back memories. Wonderful images. I was terrified of my grandmother's wringer...it was electric. I love to see laundry drying on the line.

I'd like the 'look' of the tub and wringer, but I doubt I'd use them often enough to make them worthwhile.

  2. My fingers still hurt from the warnings regarding that nasty wringer ... remember we had to feed in the garment evenly and DONOT get the fingers toooo close....somehow the clothes did seem very very clean though!

  4. Hey Renee
Great images and interesting post.. i vaguely remember that wringer too.. but mostly i remember that my brother stuck his arm in a newer machine whilst it was spinning.. my mother had to unwind his arm to take him to the hospital... had forgotten about that till this post reminded me!!

Maybe i should get a wringer and look glamorous too!! Have a great weekend.. xx Julie

  5. I saw that too and wondered the same thing.
It is funny how we have come this far? A lot of our ancestors were green & did not know it!
    Ha Ha !!!

Thanks for the images, great post!

  6. All I can say is that I'm happy to be on this planet now and not then (or at least I don't remember if I had an incarnation during "wringer" times).

    Happy Weekend!!

  9. Sorry Darlin' but all I want to do is throw the clothes in the machine, push the button & let it happen without me. I would never have made a good Pioneer Woman 'cos the wagon didn't have an outlet to plug my hairdrier & straightener into.
My sweet old Grannie actually lost the tops from 2 of her fingers when she stuck them in the wringer as a 3 year old. Not a happy moment I reckon.

  11. We were given an old wash basin and use it for our kindling. I love it. My husband says that I have an obsession with laundry and I remember my Grandmother doing her laundry with an old washbasin and board. I love bringing back simplicity. I feel it is giving not only our elders respect, but our future generation too.
Washing can be therapeutic the old fashioned way, and nothing can be finer that laundry hung on a line.

  12. Love the sink made from the old washtub. We lived in Holland when I was a girl, and I remember my Mom bathing my sister and I in a big washtub just like that one. Took me back. I too love industrial pieces reborn in fab new ways.

  14. Love galvanized tub. I am afraid where I come from the phase used was, "Don't get your tit in a wringer." That's southern Oklahoma and straight from my daddy's mouth. He was quite the little mischief maker.

  15. Yeah...give me a little grid, no screw it...give me A LOT of grid when it comes to laundry.

Hate it...said in my best sing songy voice!
